Snowy Plover
Charadrius alexandrinus
Synopsis:
Restricted to two habitats: open sand beaches and shores of interior
alkaline lakes. The records from the Klamath Falls
area are notable, but breeding was not confirmed. This species formerly bred
in Tillamook County (Bayocean Spit) but
apparently did not do so during the project period. However, it nested in 2000
at Necanicum Estuary (Clatsop County).
Habitat Associations:
strongest
Seasonally Wet Playa (9145 acres)
Coastal Dunes & Ponds with Widely Scattered Shrubs/Trees (43276 acres)
lesser
Salt Desert Scrub Shrubland (165467 acres)
Relative Detectability:
Difficult to spot, but this species was the focus of
surveys by the Oregon Natural Heritage Program
during the atlas project period.
Challenge:
Watch additional alkali flat habitats for possible breeding.
